Why We Must Adjust Teams for the New U.S. Soccer Age Groups
Beginning this fall, U.S. Soccer is switching from birth‑year age groups to school‑year age groups (August 1 – July 31). This change shifts every age group by up to (8) eight months, which means the league divisions your child will play in are now different than before.
Because the age groups themselves have changed, we must adjust our teams to match the new system. If we don’t, our players would end up competing against teams that did adjust — meaning our kids would be significantly younger and at a competitive disadvantage on the field. This affects safety, development, and overall enjoyment.
We know team friendships are important, and we will preserve as many social connections as possible. But aligning with the new age groups ensures your child is placed correctly and fairly.
The good news is that this is a one‑time reset. Once teams are aligned to the school‑year system, we will not have to make this adjustment again.
A major benefit of the new system is that children can now play in the same age group as their classmates at school, which makes the experience more fun, more social, and easier for families.
